I’m Hikmatullah Kharoti, an Afghan photographer and creative designer. My photography journey began in 10th grade with micro photography, revealing details the human eye cannot easily see. At the time, it felt more like a hobby than a career. I earned my degree in graphic design and later worked as a creative designer at Afghanistan’s Central Bank. My work has been recognized through awards and featured on national television.
Photography remained a hobby until the fall of Afghanistan in 2021. Over the next two years, under the new Taliban government, I traveled through six provinces of Afghanistan, documenting as much as I could. I began seeing stories everywhere that needed to be captured, and my focus shifted from tiny details to human stories, people, places, and moments. Those stories and that journey eventually led me to an APF Fellowship at the University of Delaware and brought me to the United States.
Moving here meant starting from scratch. I had to teach myself things I had never needed before, even something as simple as using Google Maps. I learned, adapted, and kept creating.
Today, after three years in the U.S., I work full-time as a freelance photographer and creative, focusing on storytelling, portraits, events, and authentic moments. I’m always open to new opportunities and meaningful connections. If you have a story, event, or project you’d like to bring to life, I’d love the chance to create it with you.
